Ferocious logo

This Saturday I helped fill the goodie bags of the Brabants Stripspektakel event. 2000 bags for adult visitors en 600 for children. Each children's bag has my new sticker, all are signed and numbered. It looked like the weather was going to bad. Before I left there was a short, but heavy rainfall and hail was dropping into the bus in Eindhoven. De driver was friendly enough to leave the door open when he went for coffee, but he had not considered any hail. Still when the actual work was in progress, the weather was fine. Filling the bags went smooth thanks to the positioning of the volunteers, an efficient assembly line. The work was done quickly thanks to the effort and good atmosphere. I can hardly wait for the event now that I've seen all these enthusiastic people. You can find me in the Artist Area and I won't be alone, zsay hello to Tosca Hamel!

For the design of the sticker I took inspiration from the new location of the event. No longer in the Koningshof in Veldhoven, but Indoor Sportcentrum Eindhoven. It's also an image of friendship, because reading comics together is fun. For a long time Friday was comic day for me and Silviano. We had a subscription with Yendor and while going back on the subway we would read a new comic together. Bonus points for who gets the Bham! reference, I'm afraid this detail was too small to properly display on the actual stickers.

The excentric kitty was meant to display some typical cat trademarks in one sticker. So what we have in the end is a kitty that has enjoyed a fish dinner, drank some milk and is taking a nap. While this cat may appear to be an angel, she is just a moment away of knocking down a vase.

The initial sketch had a pile of fish bones and as you may see I didn't know what to do with the tail. The sneaky angel bit was not present at this stage.

The second sketch I wanted the cat to look a bit heavy, but he looks more like he works out a lot. This is where I decided to add the angel and devil bit, with the devil part showing through in the colouring. The fish bones disappeared to put more emphasis on the angel/devil aspect.

For the third sketch I wanted the colouring to be more simple and loose the muscle look. He ended up looking like a mix of Fancy Fancy and Azraƫl.

Fourth sketch ditches the devil aspect and goes punk. I was happier about the look of the body and made it more fuzzy. The male versions looked cool, but this female version appealed more to me.

The final version is very close to the fourth sketch. I decided to add a wink and bring back the eaten fish.

The leopard went through a number of changes. The original sketch was more comical, the character design shared fatures with the Pink Panther and the leopard ran so fast, he lost his spots in order to get over the finish line.

For the second sketch I wanted to devirt from the original idea and go for a leopard with a bit more realistic features. During the trials I started to wonder how a female version would look. I wasn't happy with the end result, but I was glad about some elements and decided to keep them.

I guess the third sketch can be considered 'Kirby-esque'. Losing the spots doesn't look comical in this version and it has become more of a burst of energy. She looks possessed while crossing the finish line.

For the last version I dropped the comical tone and went for a sense of pride and achievement.

Inspiration for the singing cats came from the Garfield strips where he performs on the fence. Also the Top Cat cartoons as those hip cats have a few scenes where they sing. And let's not forget that swinging number from The Aristocats!

The fence disappeared during the first refined sketch as I wanted the figures to be front and center. I was quite content after finishing this one. Didn't really wanted to change that much.

The mouse entered the scene during the final sketch. I'm not really sure where he came from. I guess the comical note I lost in the leopard sticker decided to transform in a mouse and join these meowing cats.

This one started heavy on the anarchy, but after that I started to think about what I really wanted to say. The basic message of the sticker is that while some become rulers, because of heritage, you can still be become a King or Queen through hard work and effort. Royalty through effort!

The design has stayed roughly the same, just small trials with the mane, crown and cape.
